People sometimes dislike admitting addictions to different forms of drugs. Thus, “to be alive is to be addicted, and to be alive and addicted is to need grace” (May 1988). This seminar will explore the stigmatization of an addict to help participants understand the psychological origins of addiction and will examine ways to help someone.

Spiritual Warfare, Possession & Oppression

đŸŽ€ Dr. Warner Richards

Multiple degrees and universities graduate. Doctor of Psychology with a specialization in Mediation and Conflict Resolution. He is also a Clinical Chaplain (College of Pastoral Supervision & Psychotherapy), a graduate of the University of the Rockies/Ashford University, holds a Masters in Christian Counseling (American Christian College and Seminary), and a Masters of Arts in Pastoral Ministry (Andrews University). His doctoral research was entitled, “The Meaning Clergy Derive from Congregational Conflict and How do they Describe its Effects on Motivation and Satisfaction.”

Three basic constructs exist Spiritual Warfare, Possession, and Oppression. Why is the study of these three constructs necessary? One of the areas of great confusion both in the Mental Health field and in the Christian Church is in the intersection of demonic influence and possession with mental disorders. Secular Psychiatry and Psychology often dismiss the manifestation or even the very existence of demonic forces. As a result, its presenting is often deemed as psychotic behavior. Demonically possessed people under psychiatric care find themselves remitted to prolonged hospitalizations and overmedicating.

In contrast, many religious practitioners (i. e., Pastors, Elders, Evangelists, Missionaries and Christian Leaders, etc.), when witnessing psychotic behavior, are quick to deem it as being demonic. We must deconstruct the confusion and clearly define terms, contrast differences between the two conditions, and improve understanding.

They were not new in the sense that they had never led anything before or they were radically different from other leaders. They were new because their influence gave you a new direction, or their belief in you gave you a new sense of worth.
